Alfred Johnson died from unspecified causes on 28th March, 1915, while in France but it is not known if he died from wounds or from illness, both of which took their toll of the men on the Western Front. At the time the 2nd Scots Guards were part of 20 Brigade, 7th Division and had been in action earlier in the month during the Battle of Neuve Chapelle.
